    Joint Ill, or Naval Ill

Best answer as to why I'm giving both is that's what the Dr. ordered :-). I really didn't ask him any verification as to why both when the vet told me what to give him. This is the first that I've seen naval ill, and I was late in getting meds in the calf b/c I didn't recognize what was going...

    Joint Ill, or Naval Ill

That's my main concern is if she'll end up being productive. She has progressed since the weekend to being able to slightly walk or hobble, but doesn't put weight on rear left leg. Back legs are really stiff, front right is somewhat stiff but better. 2 shots / day of Penicillan + 1 shot per...

    Joint Ill, or Naval Ill

Anyone ever have a calf w/ Joint Ill? Severe swelling in joints in hind legs and one front elbow. Vet says Joint Ill, infection thru naval at birth that settles in the joints. I've got her on a agressive antibiotic plan, and I'm hoping she will make it. I was just seeing if anyone ever had...

    finishing steers

So 5-7 year old cow that's fat and happy, but not bred you could advertise as a burger cow? I've just never attempted to sell freezer beef locally that wasn't a 2 year old steer and sold by the qtr, half, or whole. But seems like a great place to move a otherwise healthy animal. I'm thinking...

    Nutrition Requirements

Where is the best place to educate yourself about nutrition requirements? I'd like to learn how to formulate mixes for different classes of my cows (lactating, dry, 6-7weights, yearling steers and heifers, etc) based on what forage and/or hay I have available. I've played around with the Ok...

    Warning about B&B scales

We bought our B&B scales a few years ago. We had some issues initially getting it calibrated. But we recieved great phone support on trying to calibrate it. We determined with phone support to have a faulty load cell. They sent a replacement cell out very quickly. BL

    finishing steers

Kathie, I've never offered up a "burger cow." But I think I could sell it very well. I have never slaughtered an older cow for my own consumption. What are your requirements for choosing the burger cow (other than she didn't breed back)?

Any Advice for cow guy getting his 1st donkeys?

Well I passed on the Donkey sale. I might try to find a young one I can raise with the cows and calves rather than putting an old one in with them. I guess i'll just have to sight in the 30-30.

Any Advice for cow guy getting his 1st donkeys?

I have no experience with horses, donkeys, or anything but cows. I'm thinking of getting a few for coyote protection. We've probably only lost 2 calves last year to dogs/coyotes, but in the last year all of our barn cats have mysteriously disappeared. I'm assuming that the coyotes got them...

Utility company drives through new seeding

We had the power company come one time to "bush hog the right of ways" that happened to be right thru our hay field.

    Holstein and Blk Angus

Here are a few pics of one of our steers. The first generation of crosses do not perform nearly as well as straight beef crosses. You HAVE to feed them to keep up body condition and milk production. Yes they do raise a big calf, but here you have to sell them kinda early before the dairy...

    Chopping corn

I think that pile needs to be packed a little more. Looks like those ridges between tire tracks could be flattened out some more by overlapping the tracks.

    Newbie A.I. troubles

I've been AI'ing for a few years, and I still get a retired dairyman to come help me. He's been doing it more than 50 years. Some cows are just tougher than others. I can go back through notes and see that some cows are just tough every year. We work in two separate chutes, but sometimes I...
