    The cost of farming

The calf is dead you have lost that money! That's ranching. If you sell her, most likely you won't get much for her. Then you may have to buy one to replace her. Since it was no fault of her own, I would consider keeping her. IF you don't let her get to fat. If you had few others like that...

    The cost of farming

Rockridge, I could argue with your figures either way a little and still come up with a similiar total figure. Bottom line it is very expensive to raise or buy replacements. This has been argued many times on these sites. My thoughts are that these females need to stay in your herd for a long...

    Raising cattle in tough conditions

Tough conditions? It looks beautiful in that video. They even have a pivot. There is nothing on my place that looks that green in August. I know they have extreme heat and but I wish they would have shown more tough conditions. There was a quick scene of some desert. But a good promotional...

Udder and teat scoring beef cows

OK, time for my example: I kept 4 heifers from an old cow. These 4 heifers are a result of an embryo transplant. (This was a first for me.) This old cow had good teats & udder until she came up open on her 16 year. I used a sire that is suppose to have thrown excellent uddered daughters...

Udder and teat scoring beef cows

Yes, thats a good site. I do my own scoring method, combining the two. Could someone with more knowledge explain the heritablity of this? h2 of udder attachment =.2 to .3 and h2 of teat size =.5 I have always know they are just moderatly heritable. I would appreciate a clearer explaination.

    Banding

I usually do it in the first day or two. But have done it at branding on the smaller ones without any problems. Try NOT to put the band tight against the body. Extra skin between the band the body makes for a smaller wound opening when it falls off. Some calves have a very small scrotum and...

    Can't make money on cows

This is one thing a learned early on, Don't worry about what others are doing or what they have! Everyones situtation is different. Everyone came about their money or the lack of it differently. Here is a couple things I try to follow: Shall not covet thy neighbors goods. ( I think it is...

    Leasing Cows

A lot of things to think about here. I once did a 70/30, I provided everything but the cow. I finally switch to a cash lease, its alot easier to split cash than calves. I pay for each bred cow that I start with, whether the calf is dead or alive at the end of the year. Somethings I insisted...

    New horned hereford bull

I just wasn't sure on the pigmentation of the eyes. I have had such problems of cancer eyes in the past, is why I am so concerned. I am anxious to see the calves, I am also concerned on my A.I.ing abilities on heifers.

    New horned hereford bull

Can anybody give the name of a Hereford bull that comes from a solid line of cows with good udders and teats, that has good pigmentation of the eyes and scrotum all in the same package with a frame score? I would like it to be under a 6 frame if possible.

I used him a little last year, with your recommendations. I haven't started calving yet. Did I read that bull died?

    New horned hereford bull

Its been 15 years since I have owned a hereford bull. I am not familiar with the pedigrees, I am looking but can't find what I want either. Maybe its too perfect of an animal that I am looking for, but I would like to see more info on the animals. I want good teats, udders, pigmentation on...
