    Utilizing free grass

Dun, you sound like you'r from these parts. I'm actually from Oakdale. The grass I speak of is in Firebaugh which is a little south of Merced, NW of Fresno. 1st cutting hay is coming off now and 7 cuttings is about the norm. I wasn't gunna wait till June to cut, if I cut it would be asap. Baling...

    Utilizing free grass

My cousin the other day told me that he has 50 acres of irrigated permanant pasture I could have for free. (cuz we're family and all) Nothing has been on it for about 6 months and its got grass up to my knees almost. My cattle wont be out of the hills till June to go over there. My question is...

    Anyone else losing calves?

I use a product called Tri-Lution from Agri-King out of Fullton Ill. It is a powder or a paste you can give anytime and I have used it for clostridial, cocci, e-coli, and salmonella problems. It's got some active ingredients that hold on to the pathogen once it attaches itself. The particle wont...

    Fertilizer Prices

fertilizer is all petroleum based. gas goes up, you can bet fertilizers will too. Agree w/ the turkey or chicken manure if you can put up w/ the stench. If there are any local dairies around see if these guys will sell you some manure cheap to spread. Most of them need to find homes for it.

    EPD

I understand the 1-5 scale as far as BW is concerned but when the BW number goes into the negative is that a good thing or a bad thing. I mean if you were looking for a good calving ease bull is a .5 better than a -.5 or -1.0?

    freemartins

Gently stick a pen or pencil up the vagina and usually an unbreedable heifer will not allow it to pass, it will be blocked. That's what most of the veal or custom calf ranches do out here when a set of twins is brought in. The cowhand then knows to send it to the bull ranch or the replacement...

    Question????

thanks, so basically "broken mouth" is somethin to stay away from when looking to buy

    Bummer!

yah, the sync program used has to be right on as well as the actuall insemination of the cow. Same thing happened to me a couple years ago. Turned out we missed the 12 hr. window in which the last lutlyse shot was supposed to be given or somethin like that. It is a tedious process.

    Question????

Here is something I see all the time in the Western Livestock Journal. Cows for sale described as "broken mouth". Never heard that terminology in California before, what does it mean along with the other ".....mouth" adjectives out there.
