odd bloat that doesn't fit the pattern

Thank you all for your input. She has been out in a paddock that doesn't have alot of lush grass for about 5 days now. She has been head down and eating! No more bloat. I will keep a good eye on her. And I have been combing the fields picking up plastic twine! She doesn't look as gaunt to...

odd bloat that doesn't fit the pattern

We have had her 2+ years with no bloat problem before. We have few legumes in the pasture and the cows were on the pasture as it greened up...so if it was the greening pasture it seems it should have been earlier. The hay is the same we fed all winther without incident. Cut on our place...

    cow with enlarged navel area

We have had this happen twice this spring. Both times it went down with no intervention in about two weeks. One was quite big and it must have been tender. My daughter tried to palpate it and got kicked! She had been reluctant to let her calf nurse and kicked him every time he head butted...

body condition scores in milk cows

We had beef cows and my first impression of milk cows is somebody needs to fatten those girls up! Now I know better...but I am wondering is there a guideline for body condition score like there are for beef cattle? We have one OLD Jersey (12-13) who is so thin. She is 45 days from calving...

I looked in the archives to learn about body condition scoring. Thanks fo that tip. I learned alot! Going into fall they were probably mostly 7's. Now they are probably 5's....definately not lower. So I think they will be ok. Thanks so much! They are not walking the fences...they are head...

    stretching my hay...how far?

They have a protein tub that has minerals and they have salt. They also get enough range cubes to keep them friendly...about 2# each a day. I don't know how to body score...I have heard of it but just don't know what the perimeters are. Thanks for your reply.

    Vet shortage

We have our vet out to do things that we could do but we feel that keeping the realtionship alive and profitable for him is in our best interest. If I haven't called him for a year I would think he might prefer his bed to an emergency call. Our vet has been great. He educates us, will advise...

    stretching my hay...how far?

After I had my hay for the winter my kids decided to get 4-H heifers. So I went into the winter with less hay than I wanted. Last fall a man at church told me he'd sell me hay when I ran out....so I hadn't worried too much. Came near to running out though- and he said he used more of his hay...

abdominal problems with cow ...diagnosis unknown

She is a gelbvieh cross. We have two of her herd mates and they didn't look this way. She has milk in all quarters and it is fine. The swelling is in front of the udder. Thanks! :cboy:

abdominal problems with cow ...diagnosis unknown

I have a heifer who lost her calf really close to when she was supposed to have it...she was way bagged up and everything...(we never found the calf). So we brought her in and grafted a sale barn calf onto her (with some difficulty :D ). That was about a month ago, now that her udder is...
