    Bad cow week!

We put our t-post driver over the spear when not in use. It serves dual purposes. a safety cover & a handy way to carry it when working on the fence!

    palpation

I know this sounds silly but it works. If the hair right between the shoulders is lying down slick, the cow is bred. Heard that a famous vet from S. Africa taught it in a clinic once years ago. I am hardly ever wrong using this method even in early pregnancy. Course it is harder to tell in...

    Rapid weight loss and lethargy

Sounds like her rumen isn't functioning to me. Nursed a good longhorn heifer through pneumonia once & that happened afterward..I saved her & she turned into a good cow. Probios & dry hay & good water..a little alfalfa maybe.

    selling beef

True that most processors inspect anyway, but you aren't required if you sell it on the hoof. We do quite a few that way. It is just like raising your own to our city friends except they don't have to eat a "friend". We get them close to the size wanted & finish 30-60 days, then deliver to...

    Blackleg Vacinations for older cows

Our vet says he wishes everyone would do it. The calves get some immunity from the dam & vaccination only costs about $2.00.

    British Whites

Have a friend who has a small place and 3 or 4 BWs..are there any breeders out there in the Central Texas area? I have helped her as I could but raise longhorns so am not real conversant with breed characteristics. She would like to get another registered heifer or cow. Contact me & I will...

    Update

Welcome to Texas! HEB is a great and affordable grocery store & Mrs. Baird's bread is sold there! My sister who moved to N. Carolina from Kerrville misses HEB more than anything else I believe! The breads & other goodies at Collin Street Bakery are way better than fruitcake too. ;-) ;-)

    Special Poem

Do you have his book "No Trophy on His Belt"? I always loved The Bull & the Pickup

    No illusions in the barnyard

It is just SO healthy. I get such a kick out of my friends' kids on the subject of cattle. It is so matter of fact & knowledgeable instead of the simpering, snickering kind of comments you hear from city kids. Course I am proud of my own kid..but she wasn't raised with the cows..She just...

    Special Poem

This was written last November by a good cowman. His name was Mel & he wrote this on finding he had cancer. He will be missed! THE GRULLA STEED It was just one of those days, when everything seemed to go wrong. With hours the same as usual, though the day seemed twice as long. I was tired...

    Longhorn Clones

Roger, don't you have a grulla bull named T-Bone? Thought I recognized your name. Here's something for you to "brag" about. His dam is 17. She is fat & shiny, has a perfect udder & beautiful texas twist horns. I delivered her last calf as a trophy steer with a load of others yesterday. He...
