    getting rid of sagebrush?

In Montana we would hook a heavy chain or cable (think 1 inch diameter) between two Cats or 4x4 JD's that was about 100 feet long and drag it. It would take a couple of times over, but you could usually get them all pulled up. We then pushed them into piles with a brush rake on the tractor...

Bad wreck by our place yesterday.

I heard on the news that there was a bad wreck(10:30 am) by our house yesterday, two people killed. Wife said a lady came to the door hysterical and said call 911 that a truck had run over the top of a car. Seems a semi driver had a coughing fit and crossed the center line and hit an elderly...

    Wastewater Sludge as Fertilizer

Just make sure that they test for heavy metals before putting it on. I know in the Bozeman MT area they have been injecting it into the soil for quite a few years. I didn't hear any complaints about it when I lived there, they did test each lagoon for heavy metals before applying it. Bobg

    Butcher prices

I charge $1.80/pound hanging weight. Cut and wrap costs $.41/pound. I feed for 90 days and they have been averaging 1200 pounds. That gives me the best return for my dollar, I have feed for 150 days, but didn't make anymore money since their efficiency goes down. Bobg

Looking for online movie clips about when to AI?

I have a lady that wants me to AI her milking Shorthorn. I had a link to a video clip on my old computer that showed a cow coming into standing heat. I want to sent it to her so she has a better understanding of when to call me. Does anyone know where I can find some? Thanks, Bob

    remont sainfoin

It's a legume that works well in a dryland area. It doesn't cause bloat like most other legumes, regrowth is supposed to be slower than alfalfa. I don't know much about it, it was developed by a guy I know at Montana State University. Here's a link to a MSU bulletin...

I haven't been on the forum since the change, but I can't hardly see the words. Is there a way to change the color? Bobg

Anyone use grass seed hay to feed cows?

I've fed bluegrass straw in the past and the cows always cleaned it up. I now pick up grass seed straw for nothing from the Plant Material Center in Pullman and feed it. It's more bedding as it sits in the field for quite a while before they bail it. There have been a few years where I'm...

How hard of freeze on alfalfa before grazing?

We're just getting enough snow/rain yesterday and today to make it muddy. My cows are still out in the hills, they probably think their starving since there's snow on the ground. I'm going to take some hay over tonight and hopefully it will tide them over until the snows gone. Once I...

How hard of freeze on alfalfa before grazing?

I have a hay pasture that is 50/50 grass and alfalfa, we've had some temps down below 30. Is this cold enough so that I can put my yearlings on it? Thanks, Bobg

    cows not digesting corn

The reason most corn is fed whole is the added benefit you gain from grinding it is used up by the cost to grind it. Bobg

    Longhorn finished?

I run my Longhorn cross calves as yearlings and then grain them for 90 days before butchering. If you look in the tailhead area and it looks fat and lumpy they are usually ready to butcher. Bobg

Lb per Lb ~ Bulls vs Steers

I know a local guy that doesn't cut his calves until they've been on feed for 60 days. He claims they gain weight quicker than steers. Bobg
