— Select Sires and Certified Angus Beef (CAB) both understand that one important aspect of creating high-quality beef is the animal's genetic potential. With a new beef sire directory now available from Select Sires, customers will notice a high percentage of Angus sires among Select's lineup that meet or exceed CAB's recommendations for marbling and $ Grid (the selection index that combines the three genetic traits that influence CAB acceptance rates). Look for the CAB Targeting the Brand™ logo throughout the catalog, denoting the Angus sires that meet or exceed these high standards.

“Select Sires is proud to offer an Angus lineup that is genetically oriented toward the high quality of Certified Angus Beef,” said Aaron Arnett, beef genetics specialist for Select Sires. “A powerful lineup of sires that create value from conception to consumption is a tradition that continues at Select Sires, and now our customer-owners can further increase profitability by choosing sires that meet CAB's exceptional standards.”

CAB's recently developed ‘Best Practices Manual' outlines recommendations for health, nutrition, implant regimen and disposition. “However, no amount of management can improve quality beyond an animal's genetic potential,” said Mark A. McCully, director of supply development for CAB. “By maintaining a focus that includes marbling, Select Sires has assembled a bull lineup that can move the beef industry forward by satisfying consumers and growing beef's market share. We commend Select Sires for this focus.”

McCully notes that marbling, a highly heritable trait, is the limiting factor for 90 percent of the Angus-type cattle that miss the CAB target. “With skyrocketing input costs and tighter margins, producers need to look at how they grow their income,” McCully said. “Feedlots are looking for cattle that gain and grade, and with that in mind, we appreciate the sire lineup assembled by Select Sires and encourage its customers to incorporate a focus on end-product quality as they make breeding decisions for the coming year.”
