SOUTH POLL GRASS CATTLE ASSOCIATION HOLDS FIELD DAY & AUCTION

The South Poll Grass Cattle Association held its seventh annual field day and auction June 26 and 27, at the farm of John and Andra Lyons in Piedmont, Ala. The association welcomed over 200 people from 19 states to the field day.

Dr. Allen Williams spoke on state of the grass-fed industry and a pasture walk was given by nationally-known grazier Greg Judy, who is the vice president of the association.

A panel discussion held Friday afternoon was led by Judy and association board members Dr. Bruce Shanks and Ralph Voss. Judy spoke and answered questions on the benefits of mob grazing, while Voss and Shanks explained and answered questions on their grazing practices.

South Poll Grass Cattle Association President Teddy Gentry shared his story of how and why he started the South Poll breed.

Ten junior association members gave their ideas on what the perfect cow was and how the association could encourage young people to become involved in the beef industry. There were champions in each of two categories, who received a $150 cash prize; the other speakers each received $100 for their presentations.

Friday evening ended with a musical performance by songwriters, including Gentry and three members of his Rockit City Band from Nashville, Tenn.

The annual cattle auction was the highlight of the day Saturday, with 10 heifers averaging $3,505, while seven cow/calf pairs averaged $5,243, and four bulls averaged $3,675.

The SPGCA appreciates those who attended the field day and those who worked so hard to make the annual event such a success. Make plans to attend the eight annual South Poll Field Day at the farm of Steve and Judy Freeman in Hartville, Mo., on June 24 and 25, 2016.
