how much is this pig worth?

Postby hilly11 » Fri Jul 13, 2012 3:30 pm

I raised a pig for my cousin, and now I am wondering what a fair price is to ask him to pay me. I dropped it off at the slaughterhouse, and he is supposed to mail me a check separately. It weighed 306 lbs. and was just a typical looking pink pig, I think cross-bred. IDK how to find out the market price for something like that?

I can buy pigs all day long at a buck a lb on the hoof. But to raise one to butcher size cost me right at $ 3/lb finished and packaged.

They are running about 60 to 70 cents a pound for that size depending on quality.

If I were him I'd dock you for getting it to heavy.

Maybe a little Heavy but it could have been heavily muscled too.
I take em in just as the start to put cover on. I don't like much fat on mine. Even then they go in right around the 220-260 mark

Seems like my best yields came in from 225-275, but I wanted a little more cover on my table hogs than the commercial ones. Best tasting one I ever produced was when I started it on a finishing ration 30 days early. I never did that to a commercial customer as the lean trend had already hit.

I've gone to a mainly slop and table scrap option. Takes a little longer but the flavor is much better and I can finish as my timetable allows. Keeps costs way down too.
Alot cheaper than full feed the whole time.

Texas says we have to re-cook that stuff if you want to use it. Takes some profit and fun out of it, so I had mine mixed.

Not for personal, but I was also feeding several for customers at the same time.

Hook if you're paying a buck a pound for 300 lb hogs ,you're dumber than Obama. I'll ship you semi loads for that.
As far a the wt. as long as it wasn't overly fat, that is a good size for butcher. Where do you all think big hams & chops come from ? If you fed & hauled it I think .70-.75 a lb is a fair price. Meat & everything else is on the way up from the drought we are having here in the mid-west.

And how many pigs have you bought down here in fl?
Are you really gonna start your shyt with me again?
Sure I can buy cheaper hogs off craigslist, but all the people I know that sell do it at a buck a lb. and half of those have stopped because there's no money in it for them at that price.
Now do you want to continue to show your ass or are you done?

I've posted on here before about my cost to grow a hog, but I can't find that post. I think is was about $2.17 per pound. At least I know what I'm eating. I know I can buy it from Walmart cheaper. Like Hook says, I can buy hogs on the hoof for a buck a pound around here, but I don't know about the quality. We feed out 4 every year because they taste like pork should.
