I'ld like to find a good ar for 300-400 bucks

Me too. Most around here want big money for em.

Besides the cost my other problem with them is the weight

Thought the Ranch .223 was Ruger's version of the WWII .30 cal carbine. Not much accuracy.

I got a lot more accuracy from my old surplus M1 carbine then I did with the ranch rifle

I had a Ranch rifle back when I trapped coyotes. I shot a few coyotes with it but they had to be close or unlucky. It was good for about 4-5 inch groups at a 100 yards at best. I ended up trading it for a Browning lever action that my kids used when they started deer hunting.
I knew a guy in Montana who used one while calling coyotes. He had a 30 round magazine for it. He said if he missed the first shot he rarely got them with the next 29. But he said it was amazing how many gears a coyote can find with that much lead chasing him.

Every m1 I've ever shot jammed about every 8th round though. Could have been age and wear But I like the platform. Considering the ome period and the knowledge they were a great advancement

Thanks for all the comments. I can make a easy $100 on it so I guess my origional idea of trading it is the way to go. I did shoot it but just wasted some ammo to see how fast it would shoot. Did not jam.
My thoughts only, don't bet the farm on them. KT 2009

M1s I shot back in the 60s were as smooth as silk and at 100yds prone, you could shoot their eyes out. That's with an apture rear sight.

Got a Russian made AK that looks like it was made in a bb gun factory but that's a shootin machine. Never tried any long range targets don't have a scope but 50 to 75 yards, it's a killer. I keep it clean and it never miss fired.

WalMart stopped selling guns in this area years ago. Last gun I bought from them was a Ruger 10/22 for $139.00, so you know how long that's been.

I have been seriously thinking about buying a mini 14 but I guess I have changed my mind.
What about the Ruger mini 30? Any of you have experience with this gun?

For what it's worth. If all ya'll are looking for a really solid , accurate , nearly indestructable ranch rifle for the pickup. Find yourself a Stevens Model 200 in .223. Put a decent scope on it and shoot Winchester white box ammo in it. Clean it once every 3 to 6 months and it won't let you down!
