The system feeds itself

Postby Dave » Fri May 18, 2012 10:13 am

My GF found out through her son about a young girl who is aging out (18) of the foster care system. She is an orphan who has been in the system since she was 2 or 3. Well GF and I met with her. She is a nice young lady. In college, has a part time job at a grocery store. She just needs a hand getting started in life. So we (much more GF than me) decide to help her out. She is going to live at GF's house. I am going to find her a car to drive. The system gave her a roof over her head and food to eat but didn't teach her the life skills to make it outside the system. So I guess that is where we come in.

Well yesterday she had to go to court to get released from foster care. Her foster mom dropped her off at court and told her to find her own way to school (there are certainly great foster parents out there, this woman isn't one of them). The court house and the college are in different towns probably 4 or 5 miles apart. So GF offered to take her to school after court. But the one that really gets me is that her case worker took her so he could get her signed up for food stamps. GF told the case worker that she didn't need food stamps because there is lots of food at her house for the girl to eat. But the case worker took her anyway. They just wont let a person do for themself. I plan to tell this young lady not to use the food stamps and I will pay for things she needs if she doesn't have the money. GF and i aren't going to let this bright young girl develope a welfare mentality.

There is literally enough food at the GF's house for a person to eat for several years. It isn't frozen pizza and a person would have to cook it but you sure wouldn't go hungry. But no, they have to sign her up for food stamps. The sad thing is that they really believe they are helping out. Instead of teaching a young person how to make do and get by, they teach them how to use the system.

Exactly the reason I think all kids of both genders should be required to join the military

I think it is one of the biggest reasons that a lot of foster kids do go into the military.

Are you thinking, maybe, about the "attorney" post/land sale issue with sick older lady/liens, etc.? There were several posts there about the SYSTEM.

Well AC, you know what they say. There are two signs of old age. One is loss of memory. And I don't remember what the other one is.
