Using Estrotect Patches

Postby HomePlaceAngus » Tue May 15, 2012 5:29 pm

When using Estrotect patches has anyone used extra glue to keep them stuck. I am having a problem with the cattle scratching them off, or at least lifting part of it. If so, what glue did you use. Your reply will be appreciated. Thanks :tiphat:

My thinking if the cattle are scratching them off they are changing the color too, it would do no good to keep them on after they scratch the color off. If the other cows are riding and getting the patches off it should be real obvious as when to breed them. The ones i've used a pretty dang sticky.

The trick is the glue has to be really warm to stick good. The only one we had problem with was on a curly haired Hereford.

LRTX1, it is not hard to tell the difference between the scratch marks and a complete rub off. That is not a problem.

We shaved the tailhead on 40 cows last week when we applied the patched and rubbed the area with a tack cloth that comes in the patches. The next day 20 were in the dirt. When we AI'd the remaining patches were stuck so tight it was hard to peel them off.

Didnt mean to imply you couldnt tell the difference. Ones ive used if the cow scratch the patch off her back all the color was gone anyway. The ones i've used seem to stick real good. Might be like Dun said and just have to get them warm first.

Fold the board of five like an accordian and stick them in your front pants pocket with nothing else in there.
As you need one pull the board out, peel one off and stick them back in till you need another. That warmed them up good enough to where it took some effort to peel them off after breeding them 2 1/2-3 days later here.

Spray adheseive on cow before applying patch. Works great. I don't remember the brand but it can be found anywhere (TSC, Bomgaars, WAL-Mart, etc.)

Try the defroster on your truck. That warms them up.

Thanks All !!!! I think that I am just getting them warm enough before putting them on. Though I have been putting them down the front of my shirt before applying. I'm just going to trying to get them warmer.
Other then having a problem getting them to stick, they work well and I really like using them.

I used Kmar glue. Still wasn't happy. Lots of guys use them and get along. One told me to keep my hand on it untill I felt the cows body heat come through the patch. I was still disapointed. Tried the curry comb. Someone said that was a no no. IDK why, but I went back to Kmars. They stay on way better and are easier for me to see off the 4 wheeler.

Super 77 spray adhesive by 3M is an excellent way to guarantee patch retention no matter what. Just a little on the tailhead before applying the estrotect is quick and very effective. Much faster and cleaner than KMars . In most cases the spray adhesive is not needed but it's very cheap insurance during a time when heat detection is of upmost importance.

I'll have to try the spray adhesive next season.
I got tired of tails taking them off. Cows would swat flies etc, catch tail hair under the patch and off goes the patch.
Now I just slap a little tag cement (like for pinkeye patches) on them and let them go. No problems after that. They either come off on there own later or if it bothers me they peel off after being on a while.
Been doing it that way several years now with no problems. Hairs to long (on some outside cattle I bred) I clipped the hair in that spot and applied the patch.
Hope this helps.
