New Member - SW Missouri - Brahman and Indo type cow

Postby cathill » Tue Apr 10, 2012 11:34 pm

We're in SW Missouri and just have 40 acres but I have a couple of cows, one with her first calf now. We've had cows here before then not for about 15 yrs (I was busy raising gaited mules). Since I've sold my jack, I'm not raising the mules and have just a few mares and 2 cows.

We've had just good crossbred cows in the past and the 2 I have now are grade cows but they're Brahman in type. Babe looks American Brahman, she's grey and typical of that type. I've had her a couple of years and this is her first calf. She's done great! She's mostly been an "only cow" other than the cows and bulls and calves to wean that come and go (my son's mixed herd). I recently bought a cow that is more Indo-Brazilian in type. Rose is 5 and has had one calf and was the only cow where I got her. She's penned up right now to settle her in here and she's with one of my son's black bulls.

I really like this type of cattle and hope to find more people here that are experienced with the Brahman/Zebu breeds to learn from and maybe even find someone close enough to buy another cow or heifer from. I hope to eventually have about 6 cows then later a bull of the same type. I'm just north of Springfield, Mo and would love to hear from anyone in my area that may know of more of these girls.

I don't have the privilege of farming for a living, my husband and I both work, he's a commercial electrician and I'm an RN. We have a bit of a zoo here.

Wildsawmill,
I'm an RN and work at Bolivar at the surgery center and the hospital. Good to see a neighbor here, we're north of Halfway.
Wollards used to have Brahman and Gyr but they retired. They lived just north of Bolivar. Carter's at Halfway have some Brahman cows from Wollards but raise beef calves from them.

I'm sure there are more around, just not for sale that I've found.

Here is my American type Brahman cow (Babe). She's white in summer but puts on a good coat in the winter that is dark grey. She had a bull calf by a black bull a week ago. Also, here is Rose. She's my new cow, 5 yrs old and Huge. She's in with a black bull now and coming in so I will probably have a calf in January. UGH Oh well, I can put her up and she'll be fine. She's more flashy, cool type and speckled.

We're going to be out a couple of days, son will be here to take care of the chickens, cows etc but I'll be back online Sunday evening when we get home so if I don't respond, that's why. I'll have my computer tablet with me but I don't know if I'll have wifi where we're going (southern Lousiana)

Babe last summer, still a heifer then

There was someone advertising on craigslist from Bolivar or Stockton (I think) that was wanting to buy Brahman type cows to raise bucking bulls. I never saw the ad again, I thought I'd call them to see if they had a good bull. I hope they advertise again. I'm home for a while this morning if you want to call 253-2206

I just wanted to share photo's of Babe's calf. He's at 6 months now and we're keeping him intact, hoping he will mature to make a good bull for my son's cow's since he's totally unrelated.

This is Bart now
