AI or Clean up - your guess?

Postby Alan » Tue Apr 03, 2012 1:01 pm

Cow delivered a heifer last night, 4/2/12, big calf at 92lbs, no trouble, big strong heifer. The cow is a Moler daughter and was AI'd to M326 (for you Hereford folks :D ) Her due date was 3/20/12, she was turned in with the clean up bull (Rib Eye son) on 6/26/11. So if the clean up bred her on the first day the due date would have been 4/4/12. is the big calf early or late, M326 or Rib Eye?

Thanks,
Alan

When we have ones that close, we DNA test. $25 and you will know for sure.

AI bull to early for the clean up bull. If she was in heat when you did the AI.

No comment, really. We only AI. Works, or it doesn't.

I hope for your sake its a M326 calf, otherwise your clean up bull may be a disaster. If his early heifer calves weigh 92 lbs what would a 14 day overdue bull calf weigh?!
Every calf deserves a white face.

Thanks for your replies, I synched the cows with a GnRH, CIDR, and Lute. I have a small herd and I'm a hobby guy so at around 66 hrs and seeing signs of heat I AI in the morning and then AI them again in the evening (it's my enjoyment and my money to use twice the semen per cow :D ) my successes rate over the last couple of years is a lot higher. If she pans out I will have to DNA test her. Although I really feel she is an AI calf, the cow has looked like one of the first to calve from day one, plus the heavier weight for a heifer we'll see how things turn out. Although thanks Harley for planting that seed on the clean up bull in my mind. (I hope I'm laughing at the end of calving season. :?

Thanks again
Alan
