7 week belgian blue bull still down

Postby julesjshaw » Thu Mar 29, 2012 3:56 pm

I have a Belgian Blue bull who is still down and won't stand after a week. He was severely dehydrated with scours. Treated by our vet. Just gave him another MoSe injection yesterday and the vet says that's it just give him time. He eats his hay and grain fine now after 4 days of tubing electrolytes to him. Has anyone ever had a calf recover 100% after being down for this long?? Is there anything else that anyone can recommend that I can do for this little guy??

Is the 7 week old calf able to suckle the cow or are you milking the cow and bottle feeding the calf? When I raised Belgian Blues, I had much better luck with the calf when I gave the cow MuSe and then fed the calf her milk. I am not a vet, but I believe the selenium is more bioavailable to the calf this way. It seemed to save a couple of calves with white muscle disease when the shots of MuSe never seemed to work. Hopefully the calf is doing okay and this helps.

How did it go with your little guy?
