i didnt think you could implant bulls?

I think it is a waste of money and can make them sterile. Don't think anyone would do it.

Really? That seems counter-intuitive. Why would that be the case?
No sarcasm here IBR, I'm sincerely curious.
I follow the 1st statement, the second was surprising ,but I'll take your word on it.
The 3rd surprised me so much I had to ask.

Implants are illegal in my part of the world; but I swear that the bulls here always outgain the steers, given they have anything to eat.

In the feedlot young bulls are always thinking with their nuts. A steer is thinking with his belly.

How about pre-feedlot? Say up to weaning? Bull calf vs banded at birth steer. Which gains better?

I don't intentionally implant bulls, however more than one 400# shove up has been implanted before. ;-)

I couldn't tell you, I only know what happens when fed.

Here bull calves will weigh about 50lbs more at weaning on average. Say a steer brings 1.75 at 600lbs. Thats $1050. Say the bull weighs 650lbs and brings 1.65. Thats $1072.50. Thats discounted a dime a pound and the bull still brings $22.50 more. But at $1.60 the bull would bring $1040. It depends on the discount. If you sale at a sale barn and are not marketing pre con calves there probably isn't much difference in what they will bring. But if you implant the steers timely prior to weaning, you just gained that 50lbs back and didnt take a discount. Now you have a $1137.50 calf. I castrate and implant all bull calves. I can't seperate them from heifers and 6 and 7 month old heifers can get bred. It also makes it easier on the next guy with adg.

Market report here had 600 pound steers at $1.63 and 600 pound bulls at $1.46. That is $978 for the steer and $876 for the bull. Now the same age bull may be heavier but he has to make up $102. And the bigger the bull the more the price goes down.

I will stick to cutting my calves at branding.
