I admit I have learned little fromTxbred; however I learnt nothing from scroote, save how to be rude to people one does not really know, to disrespect the elders on this board, and generally be an enemy to one of our african friends.

Because they have a higher IQ than we do. When sweat is running down the crack your butt messing with hay ole Belle is in the shade chewing her cud. When we have ice hanging off our hat brim putting out hay ole Belle is laying in the loafing shed. The thing that really hurt's is when you finally figure it out that an animal whose stomach is 30 times larger than it's brain and we are the lacky's.
Isom will most likely never figure out what this is about much less the IQ part.

I hope not. I plan on being 90 and still being outwitted by cows. My goal is to be the oldest man at the coffee shop still ranching and doing the work myself.

There are three gentlemen here that I always make sure I stop by and shoot the breeze with. One is 94, one is 82, and the other is 80. They all still run what I consider sizable operations, 300 mamas or more, and do most of the work themselves. I'm hoping there is something in the water down here :D . I have tons of respect for men like that. They are just a wealth of knowledge. I soak up all I can.

I got back into cattle with Hereford x Gelbvieh cross because I had to have gentle animals due to poor fencing and small children. Since then we have been working on a fullblood gelbvieh herd. The reason for that is to preserve a genetic base and hopefully satisfy a niche market when breeders seek a specific set of genetics.

We started with crosses but got tired of getting docked at the salebarn. Saw a friends registered Angus herd and WOW did them babies grow SO much better than my crosses. We bought a few bred heifers and a couple bred cows. Decided on raising Registered Breeding stock and kept the crossbreds but bred them Angus to see results of matings.

I think one of the keys to their longevity is that they "do most of the work themselves" none of this "retirement" stuff - the body tends to seize up if you don't keep using it. Maybe the mind also?

Neighbor lady has been a widow forr better then 20 years and i now in her 80s. She's living on the farm that her grandparents seetled 100 plus years ago. She does 99% of the owrk on the place herself from fixing fence to moving the bulls to feeding in the winter. Still checks all of the cows twice a day rain/shine/snow or electrical blackout from ice storms. She's cut down now to around 150 pairs. I've never seen a calf in her pastures that doesn;t have an ear tag that's more then a day old. Tough old lady and the sweetest kindest person you could know. Last year she finished get her college degree. Amazing woman! She has a twin sister that lives in town and wouldn;t know which end of a cow the calf comes out of.

They are a lot of seized parts as well, look at hem knuckle's and watch the limp's.
Longevity is an attitude, a person I know that worked in the forest industry got paralyzied from the nipples down by an accident. This guy hunt's and fishes lives by himself chases women and catches quite a few.
You might see him in the middle of the wood's squirrel hunting or whatever.
He has built an all terian electric wheel chair and lift, has a mule rigged up like you wouldn't believe.
He is totally on his own and has the best attitude of anyone I have every met.
