Had a Good group of calves..and learned something..

Because a person truly never stops learnin'// All calves sired by a gianormous Brangus bull..

This is a heifer calf born to an Angus cow..this cow was my on death's door bottle calf y'all may remember from afew years ago.

This is a bull calf born to a Brangus heifer..this heifer was actually the first calf of my Brangus cow.
Image

And this is my learning experience..bull calf out of my Brangus cow. She hadn't calved yet when I sent them all back to the same brangus bull..so I didnt know what the calf would look like..now I know..while he is super cool looking, not sure a brangus bull is a wise choice for this particular cow..unless Im looking to produce bucking bulls..as that is what he looks like. He is also monsterly huge, even though he was born a month after the other calves. The evil part of me wants to halter break him and let my son show him in the market steer class at the county stock show next winter...just because of how he looks. :)

So, now I need to figure out what my plan is this year..love the calves off the first two by the Brangus bull..not sure what Im going to do with big momma cow #3..

Do you have a pic of that third calfs mother ? I'm curious as to where the white speckles on his belly come from.

Have not a clue..the bull is solid black..not a speck of white..momma has some white on her belly and udders..that is it..

I see that is indeed wierd for that bull calf to come out looking like that. Could be the cow had a mother or grandmother that was a Holstein-Brahman cross, because those white speckles will keep showing up even when crossed with a black bull.

It's not unusual for brangus to have some small amount of white usually on or around the udder but it should never extend past the navel....even on registered cattle it happens but this one is a bit excessive. Goes back to the brahman in them.

Don't know..none of the bull's other calves have the speckles..some of them look like him, regarding how brahma-y he looks..but no speckles..he was definantly a surprise. This cow has lots of bone..but I sure would be surprised to find holstein back there..

I dont know how true it is but I read somewhere that Holstein blood was added to the modern Angus to add frame size, I dont know how far back it took place if it did. I would bet that cow has a little more Brahman, or Holstein somewhere back in her family tree.

I think she isnt a "true" brangus, in actual percentage..I think her Brahma blood is higher then the 3/8. Whatever reason, her calf this year was definantly not what I was expecting..so will have to find another bull for her next year. He's cool looking..but not sure how he will "fit" in our program..time will tell I guess.

Said cow has had previous calves by a purebred Angus (retained heifer) and purebred Maine Anjou (steer going to the butcher next month)..neither of them had the coloring of this calf..just the "normal" white on the belly like their mother.

I've got a heifer just like that right now. Flecked up a bit. Bull has never thrown a flecked calf. Dam hasn't either.

Had a cow like that and all her calves looked 100% brangus. Sold her finally back in May or so and it was almost like this heifer coming along a month later was her replacement. :D Maybe this new one will be as good as that old flecked cow.

That huge brangus bull is probably okay if he has smooth shoulders and throws small calves. That's the kind I prefer so long as he is a gentleman when he covers the ladies.

BHB-the bull is a real gentleman with the girls. both of the first calves I posted were out of heifers..and neither of them had any issues, regarding birthweight and such. man who owns him sold off every last cow and calf during the drought..but kept the bull..said he liked him to much..dont blame him. :)

that calf's color and look were just a surprise to me..

I'll get down to the pasture and get a pick of my flecked up heifer and let you take a look. Like I said, this is my second time around.
