Dun's mineral feeder-where is it?

Just some advice about mounting this mineral feeder, dont mount it too close to anything that the cattle can push it up against, or they will dump it.... maybe im just retarded for not thinking of this in the first place...

i hung one from a truss in the barn this winter, and it was up against a gate, the cows can lift it and hold it against the gate and get it in the right position to dump out the mineral...

It looks just like everybodys mineral feeder. I posted a picture of it a long while back so I got blamed for it. Wasn't even my idea. There a thousands of those hanging on trees around here like fruit

We have a barrel feeder hanging in a tree just like the picture. One exception though. Our barrel is white. We can tell at a glance if there is still mineral in it. Don't have to go look in to see if we need to refill.

I went to move my "Dun's Mineral feeder" the other day and found it had became inhabited with some rather unfriendly red wasps.
I threw it in the back of the truck and took off real fast and managed to lose them. Can't believe I didn't get stung.
They must not have been bothering the cows though because it was almost empty.

I guess that disproves the theory on wasps not building on anything blue that I read on the tips/tricks section doesn't it?

Been hanging them in our trees for MANY years now. Another feature that you can add in the summer.
We drill a small hole & place another small eyebolt above the hole & hang a "bullet" in front of the hole, low enough that it won't swing INTO the hole. Load it up with insecticide, and it takes care of face flies. Cattle have to shove the "bullet" out of the way when putting their head into feeder.
You can purchase "bullets" at Tractor Supply or other farm stores like that.

Dub, you are right.
My feeder is blue just like Dun's. I saw that on the Weather channel or DIYTV and they said wasp and dirt daubers wouldn't build on anything blue. Can't believe anything you see on TV.
Or maybe it just doesn't work on Missouri wasps.

Jeanne - Simme Valley , that's a great idea for face flies. I was trying figure out someway to do that.
If I have time I'm gonna get a couple of bullets on the way home from work tonight.

We put the small eyebolt above the hole to keep the bullet centered, but we tie it to the large eyebolt.

Yes, because of the way it hangs the snow doesn;t get in and the wind tends to blow the opening away from the wind. This area has a lot of wet season and the only problem we've had is if the top openings/holes aren;t sealed.
I like to use a U bolt and chain to hang its o that the weight of the minerals and barrel is spread out more.

Also, you can drill hole/holes in a piece of wood & put it inside the barrel for the eye-bolt or U-bolt.
