Best Ear Tagger

Post by cowgal604 » Sat Jun 08, 2019 8:29 am

Can anyone give me the name of their favourite ear tagger. I’d like to get my step dad one for Father’s Day. He complained about how crappy ours was well tagging our last calf and I thought what’s better than an ear tagger for Father’s Day. I’d like to get him a nice one.

z tagger, you might want to include z tag marker pen and z tags so ready to use.
I prefer blue calf tags for bulls and blank pink tags for heifers to write birth date, sire, dam info
on the tag. (I write on the front and back of tags) also writing shows up really well on yellow tags.
15 seconds in the microwave after writing helps bake it on permanently.

In Canada we have to use these specific ear tags. They are a numbered circle no place to write. Circle on both sides sits flush against the ear. No dangle. And because we are just a small farm we don’t use our own numbering or naming on tags. Sorry should of mentioned that. Can I use that tagger for all other tags?

no z tags only
looks like a tie again this year... :)

Every man should own a pair of suspenders (I saw that on a suspenders website)
I like the type with swivel hooks, swivel makes them self straightening and they hook on to belt loops, rather than the clasps that damage pants or having to sew buttons on pants.
At least 30mm wide so they don't cut into shoulders... 1.5 inch wide is better.

It sounds like you need one that does the EID tags (Electronic ID). Most of those piers will also do the bigger type tags as well. There is often an insert that you pull out to do one or the other.

I have been using the Z tags as well, they work for the EID buttons as well as the tags (for the ones made by Z tags)
I got the tagger for free from my stockyard if I buy 100 tags

Here's what's nice about the Ztagger, It automatically releases after tagging, and the pin can rotate, so (especially on adult animals) if they pull away from you it doesn't snag. the one thing I don't like is they don't have a latch to keep them closed.. minor inconvenience though.

Whereabouts are you?

Allflex - and they work on the RFID tags. They sell them.

LOL I do the same. Red tags for heifers, yellow for males. If I have a freemartin, I put a yellow tag in the left ear LOL
BTW - my farm colors are Red & Yellow. (signs, ads, show stuff - so why not eartags)

I’ll be the odd one out. I know this thread is about tagger guns, and I do like the ztag gun. Very comfortable and easy to use. My problem comes with the ztags themselves. I cant get the dang things to stay in. I’m lucky to get a calf to weaning with the tag still in. In their defense, I have some pretty brushy/crappy pastures. I’m sure people with nice pastures get along fine with them.

All that being said, I still prefer my allflex gun. It is all metal and very easy to use. Retention is much better on the allflex for me.
Down fall is allflex cost me 32$ for 25. I get z tag feedlot tags 18$ for 50.

I buy Permaflex eartags (dealer for my NY Simmental members) and use the Allflex taggger. I also have some Richie eartags. the ones that you use a Dremmel (sp?) to carve your numbers/letters into the tag. I use the Richie for mature cows that have lost their Permaflex eartags. Out of about 55 mature cows, maybe 6 have the etched out tags. Great retention.

Yes. We are in Langley, BC. What tagger do you use to get those required transportation tags in?

I use the Z tags, I get mine from the BC livestock coop in Kamloops...
All in all, I'd say choose what's convenient for you, use the tagger that matches your ear tags and that you don't have to travel all over he;;'s half acre to get..
