3 more days to put weight on

Post by Silver » Sun Oct 13, 2019 10:12 am

We will be shipping out calves on Wednesday, looking forward to see how things shake out. Started putting out hay the other day to get the calves used to it and firm them up prior to hauling.
I'm pretty happy with the job these young cows have done on their calves, hope they are bred back in time.

The red cow looks like she’s wearing a nice toupee.

I've got one first timer with a heifer calf i'm keeping as a replacement, she's 206 days old today, I should see if I can get some pictures of her.. Momma is probably just over 1000 lbs and the calf is over 500.. she did good for a little girl.

I am thinking Silver’s heifer going to wean 70% of her own weight. I hope she bred back too. Sometimes those big producers put too much into the calf to do the other job.

I've noticed sometimes, if they do breed back (Mine did), their next calf is a little smaller.. But I know they're capable producers after the first one so I'll put up with it.. Others start with a smaller calf and work their way up

She's not one I've seen bulling, so things are looking up. Preg check day will tell the tale.

Those are some dandy calves! Did everything go smoothly today at shipping? I hope they rang the bell for you.

Thanks, things went well. Started at 8:00 sorting the calves off the cows. Sorted the calves according to sex, then sorted keeper heifers out. Last truck left at 12:30.

Steers averaged 684 lbs across the board average price per head $1,424.00 CAD
Heifers average 611 lbs across the board average price per head $1,135.03 CAD

All in all quite satisfied.
