Some Murray Grey Pictures

Post by Backbone Ranch » Tue Jun 04, 2019 5:38 pm

This fall, we will be calving out our largest group of first calf heifers. We are pregnancy checking them all tomorrow morning, and if all goes well, we will have 16 calving at the end of September and early October. The majority of these females are daughters of BB Uncle Tony and are bred to BB General, a Monterey Marshall son.
These first three females are bred two year old daughters of BB Uncle Tony.

This next female is our first calf out of JOPA Elation Power, a Murray Grey bull that was born in 1986. She has a little more frame than our other females. She too is bred to BB General.
Image

This cow is one of my favorites. She is a 7 year old Murray Grey x Guernsey cross that raises some awesome calves.
Image

And this is a granddaughter of the cow above. She is sired by BB Uncle Tony and is 10 weeks old. Her full sister from 2018 was our heaviest heifer calf at weaning.
Image

This calf is another daughter of BB Uncle Tony. She too is 10 weeks old, and I think that she will turn out very well.
Image

These last pictures show two potential herd bull candidates. The first bull is an 8 month old son of BB Uncle Tony that is out of a first calf heifer. He was 64 lbs at birth.

This second calf is 12 weeks old. He had a 92 lb birth weight and is out of a 9 year old cow. This calf is either an AI sired calf, born 15 days past the due date, or a Tony calf, born 6 days early. Historically, this cow has never had a calf over 82 lbs. We have collected tail hair from him and will be DNA testing him shortly.

That 905 calf is going to be a pretty slick calf. Good luck.

Good looking animals all around.
Mommas did a great job on those 10 week old ones.

What a nice crop of females. Love your 904 heifer- part bred or not she's a keeper. I look forward to seeing what General can produce. How is your younger Marshall son coming along?

Thank you for the feedback. We are very happy with this set of bred heifers. In the past, there has been a decent range in the size of our females, but we are now getting a consistency that we have not had before.

She is probably one that will end up dying on the place. She is extraordinarily docile, never seems to lose weight, and will happily raise a second calf. Back when she was a yearling, she would bellow and come running whenever my little sister came into the pasture.

We too are really excited to see what General does over out Tony females. I've got a really good gut feeling about it though. Below is a photo that I took yesterday of General with an 18 month old Tony daughter.

And unless something drastically changes, our current Monterey Marshall son is destined to be a steer. His dam is phenotypically one of our best cows, but she has not thrown anywhere near as good as herself. She is currently being bred to Tony, so we will see if that changes things at all. This is our current Monterey Marshall son at 3 1/2 months.

Wow! General sure has filled out since the last pictures I saw of him.

Nothing wrong with 901 either... have you kept any of her calves to maturity yet? Maybe he won't really start bulking up until 10-12 months.

Is he lacking the width and length when compared to your Tony sons? He sure has a nice heifer bull shoulder...

You might not know the value of her son until you trial him. The next generation could be replicas of her and there is only one way to know and learn.
