What Sells Heifers in Kentucky

Post by Bright Raven » Thu Feb 07, 2019 8:06 am

There are three primary factors:

1. CAIP
2. CAIP
3. CAIP

Then price. The most popular project pursuant to the CAIP cost share program is heifer purchase both open and bred. It exceeds infrastructure projects, fence projects, bull projects, etc. I have participated on both ends - I bought heifers with CAIP cost share and last year I sold two AI bred heifers under cost share. The demand is strong. I sold two heifers last year but I received several requests that I did not have stock to fill.

Anyone who has registered heifers and sells them as guaranteed bred is going to have a strong market. There are several big sales in Paris, Maysville and other Stockyards that have special heifer sales and CAIP is a major factor contributing to the strength of those sales.

What is with this unhealthy infatuation with cattle in Kentucky? LOL
In that post? Very matter of fact and nothing negative is implied.

It is a state of Kentucky program. County Agricultural Investment Program. Frequently referred to as Cost Share.

It is funded with dollars Kentucky received in the class action law suit settled with Big Tobacco companies for damages due to use of tobacco products.

Farmers who meet specified requirements receive money to fund farm projects such as:

Infrastructure
Water systems
Genetic Improvement - that includes the heifer purchases
Fencing
ETC ETC

It has been responsible for strength in the sale of high end bred and open heifers.

I've never been to Kentucky but my credit card card was skimmed and I bought $1,900 worth of pizza in Louisville once!

I'm guessing what sells heifers around here is:

Depth of body
Good feet
Good maternal history
And no snot blowing
Not to mention the obvious, pedigree etc.

Our state hasn't any program like that.

More detail.

Heifers that qualify for CAIP reimbursement have to meet the following:

Minimum pelvic score
Vaccinated
If bred, bull must have at least a 10 CE
Requires an affidavit signed by seller

That sounds like Good protocol for anyone raising cattle.

Each county sets its own cost share percentage. My county reimburses 75 %. Most do around 50 %.

There is a $5000 limit in most counties.

Yep. I have purchased 6 heifers under the program.

Edited to add: you cannot buy and sell heifers under the program in the same year for obvious reasons of conflict.

I agree Raven the CAIP programs are definitely a motivator for purchasing heifers. We have been selling bred heifers for 10 to 12 years mostly through the bred heifer sales.
As far as what sells consistently the best in the heifer sales are the larger frame and well conditioned heifers.
Breeds are predominantly Angus or Angus X. BWF have been selling consistently well. Last year the 2018 sale that we sold in was somewhat of an anomaly from past years in that Charolais X heifers were among the high selling ones consistently.
I guess it just depends on what individual buyers want at a given time.

The Limit Here is $2500 and up to 5 heifers. So basically $500 per heifer. Dad and my Uncles bought 2 from the Kenco Family Matters Sale and are trying to go through it this time. First time any of us has tried buying heifers through a gov. program. Have bought a couple bulls through the cost share program but its been years ago.
