Best maternal continental bulls to sire replacements?

Postby brihop » Wed Jul 04, 2012 10:46 am

Heres the situation... I'm in the south & may have opportunity to AI some Brahman cows in order to produce F1 replacement heifers. The F1 replacements will eventually be bred to a Black Angus bull.

Heres the question... Out of the maternal continental breeds (Simmental, Braunvieh or Gelbvieh), which specific bulls would sire the best F1 BrahmanX replacements? I've looked over whats offered by the major suppliers and here are the two that caught my eye:

Ya'll got any other, possibly better suggestions?

He's black but my choice for a Gelbvieh after raising some of his daughters would be BooBoo from ABS. For Siimenthal Autobahn fomr slect sires has produced some great daughters.

Ive used 3 Sim bulls lately Manifest hes at Accelerated Genetics alot of growth in the bull i have a few daughters out of him that look good. I used a bull called PRS Blazin Hot(ASA#2524433 Cattle Visions) on all my registered angus in the winter. I used a bull called 3C Southbound on my Sim cows and a few commercial cows(ASA# 2525432 Martin Farms has him) ive got a bull calf out of 3C that looks as good as any calf i ever had. Not sure about the maternal side of these bulls time will tell. I think with A.I the sky is the limit as what you can use to make great cows.

of the two Simmental sires you linked, my vote would go to the Jump Start bull, if I were breeding for heifers. I know the club calf folks are in love with Grandmaster, but that's not what I'm going for.
You might also look at Dikeman's Sure Bet and WS Beef Maker(if you aren't opposed to red bulls) at ABS.
Manifest, Entourage, and Lucky Man all bring some good stuff to the table, as well.

Now, how well any of the aforementioned bulls will work on Brahman females...I dunno -but they work well on Angus/SimAngus/ANxSH cows.

Sure couldn't help but think that BraunviehXBrahman females would be hard to beat, and Angus-sired calves out of 'em oughta be super.

TNT GUNNER he's a red, non-spotter, non-diluter
of the two you linked to I'd vote for Jump Start @ $15 he's a good value.
sorry my link paste may not have worked for Gunner :(

Brihop, I'm no expert, and I cannot give you a name of the best bull to AI service your cows. But, I have owned brahman cows and Simm cows. About 2 months ago, I had to sell 5 of my best cows. My pastures are shot because of the lack of rain and heat. The 4 of the 5 could of have been registered as Simbra. I sold these particular cows because, we have more Bruanvieh and Charolaise cows. They were fantastic mothers, and could handle your heat. They weaned some of my biggest calves using a black SimAngus bull on them. Some of the cows were the result of a Brahman bull on Sim cows and some were from SimAngus(.75 sim x .25 ang) on Brahman cows. I really hated to part with them. I currently have 1 simbra cow left and 1 brahman cow left. Each have a calf from my Bruanvieh bull, and both are heifer calves. Both calves are keepers, provided the weather improves here. We weaned our first fall calves this spring from the Bruanvieh bull. From a visual perspective, they were the best set of heifers we have raised. I knew no one with bruanvieh but read and studied them. I have not been disappointed. I chose braunvieh for replacements. We bought the best bull we could afford, which was a full blood. The future will tell if it was a good move or not. Mexico, Central and South America use bruanvieh and brahman cattle with great success, I don't see why it would not work in Florida. I intend to post pictures, but have been scramblin to buy hay. Maybe I can get it done soon. AS a note, most brahman cows have few difficulties with calving from your proposed bull choices. Using a brahman bull on continental cows can be more of a challenge. Caustic has mentioned this, and I second that from experience.

You're defeating the purpose of the 3 way cross by using a Angus bull over heavily Angus influenced 'continental' cross cows.

On average pasture. You'll be lucky to keep brahman x cont cross cows in a bcs 4. Per MARK, avg bcs for gelbvieh cows on pasture is 4.8.

You've got the equation backwards and are just trying to make it more difficult for yourself.

Why are brangus, gerts, and brafords all successful?.. because they work. Why are gelbray, charbray, and simbrah not?... Because the don't.
