1" per 100# is the figure "recommended". I prefer my replacements better than the normal, but you are right, that's good enough.

Why is 1 sq in per 100# recommended when the preferred size REA for the slaughter houses is 15-16 sq inches on a 1200 to 1300 lb live animal?

Could it be that 1 inch per 100 is a good ratio for Angus influenced cattle?

From the BIF:
A 700 lb. carcass requires a minimum 12.2 sq. in. ribeye area or the yeild grade goes up.
Whenever someone says "I'm not book smart, but I'm street smart", all I hear is "I'm not real smart, but I'm imaginary smart".

So 1 in per 100 would be the minimum you would want not the recommended?

1200 lb live = 720 carcass at 1 in per 100 would only have a 12 sq in REA.

I could care less about the heifer's ribeye of whether its 10 inches or 16 inches............ or even 24.....

I've read this thread several times and I guess I just fail to understand the logic or reasoning behind sacrificing your cow so you can toot your horn on epds.... and scan data.

I would never sacrifice my cow period. Long before this cow got that thin, I would have pulled her into the chute and gave her ivermect injectable and followed it up 2-3 weeks later with a good dose of Valbazen. She looks very rough, wormy and mineral deficient.
Fluke worms are hard to get rid of and they are in areas that have never used to have them.

I know you say she's always like that, but that doesn't make it "normal".

Would you rather me sacrafice her with a calf or in a cardboard box from MickeyD's. I can't help it if she looks like she's wormy or needs mineral, she had all the wormers and she had all the opportunity in the world for mineral.

what makes you think a larger-than-suggested ribeye is better? with that logic, a 30 in ribeye would be better.

Let's not get carried away! As mentioned, I should have said "minimum" rather than "recommended". I'm not setting any rules - just industry standard.
I strive for "better than average" for my herd. Not shooting for monster cattle, just great cattle for seedstock.

not at all. this is a major point that 90% of seedstock folks don't grasp and 99% don't practice. bigger/more/faster isn't better; it's just different. pick a target (for a reason) and stick to it... even when you overshoot it.
