Finally some real food..............

Post by jltrent » Sun Jan 19, 2020 6:25 am

https://time.com/5767825/usda-roll-back ... h-program/

The poor kids just dumped their plate and went to the snack machines to spend their money. This was a total nightmare for the schools/students and anybody that had to live by these rules shoved down their throats.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) announced that the rule changes are an answer to complaints of food waste and help to simplify meal patterns. There is too much food waste and that more common-sense flexibility is needed to provide students nutritious and appetizing meals. We listened and now we’re getting to work,” said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue in a public statement. “Our proposed changes empower schools to give their very best to our children nationwide and have the potential to benefit nearly 100,000 schools and institutions that feed 30 million children each school day through USDA’s school meal programs.”

Why was it ever messed with?????????????????????????????????

I don't know anything about what is going on there but my immediate thoughts are to get rid of the snack machines.....

A hungry kid will eat whatever is put in front of them.

Good ideal, but there needs to be more meat (protein) on their plates as they want eat mostly fruits and vegetables... I guess they could put apples and green tea in the snack machines....

The poor kids just dumped their plate and went to the snack machines to spend their money. This was a total nightmare for the schools/students and anybody that had to live by these rules shoved down their throats. The schools were able to build their funds up as they made a lot of profit on the snack machines to buy supplies as the schools owned them.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) announced that the rule changes are an answer to complaints of food waste and help to simplify meal patterns. This may not occur in all schools but according to some TV investigations the kids have thirty minutes to get to the cafeteria and eat and get back to their room. Would they eat more if they had more time.

I guess my point is why mess with the food to start with. The problem is lack of activity, as most kids of today would rather set on their azz and play a game on the PlayStation or play with their phone than to run and play outside.

Unless you've eaten from the Obama era crap food mandate, you'll never understand why they are dumping it, and going with snack food.

Exactly. I guess most here haven’t had the school food the last several years. Its horrible, I’d dump it and buy snacks too.

I can tell you for sure the food you eat has a lot to do with whether you can get the Type II diabetes under control. I have a hard time with it. Also Type II is at epidemic proportions. America has the fattest people in the world.

When I was in school many years ago we had cornbread muffins, meat loaf, Barbecue wieners, mashed potatoes, pinto beans. Mack and cheese and maybe a little piece of sheet cake for desert. Not all on the same day. You did not have a choice for anything else as there were no drink or snack machines. And white milk no sweet chocolate milk. Was not much different than what we had at home. Oh yea fish sticks on Friday even if there were no Catholics in the school.

You didn't see a lot of overweight kids from eating all of that. When play time came they went outside and played and when they got home there was some activity/work to do outside also. I believe current lifestyle has as much to do with the current BMI increase as anything.

kids have been throwing away the stuff they don't like since school lunch was invented. this trolling rule roll-back serves two purposes: one is the ongoing attempt to erase ANYTHING the previous administration accomplished and second is to appease the corporate "food" manufacturers that are now contracted for these services. back in the day, schools actually prepared lunches in a kitchen. some were good, lots were not - but now it is a scheme to make money, not provide nutrition to kids. and "food" service companies don't make money on fresh fruits, vegetables or quality meat.

I never got school lunch. It was brown bag for all 12 years. Things were a little tight. But we had some laying hens. Mom made egg salad sandwiches a lot. I hated egg salad and still do. I tossed them in the garbage.
