Contest 25 June - 1 July "Sunrise/Sunset"

Postby alisonb » Mon Jun 25, 2012 1:53 pm

It never ceases to amaze me how nature paints a beautiful picture for us day to day and.....they are absolutely free, all we have to do is take the time to appreciate them. This week we need to capture the horizon skies in all their splendor and glory on camera.

The contest will run from 25 June - 1 July, the voting poll from 2 - 8 July. All entries to be submitted via personal message to hillsdown on or before 1 July. The winner will be announced on 9 July.

I can't wait to see your entries, good luck all :D

Just for interest - sunset on Mars(I took the pic when I visited friends there last month  )

Sunsets are generally more spectacular than a sunrise and was wondering if we would be recieving many sunrises. A clear pristine sunrise can be just as beautiful. How about a 'green flash', anybody ever seen one?

I don't know about more spectacular, more that most folks have more time to stand around and admire them late in the day. (Also, bright red sunrises can be scary if you're a farmer, the bible was right on that one)

I have to confess the first few images that came to mind though are sunsets.

no, only the oldest cows are docked. When I first started sharemilking it was all of them except the heifers I'd raised myself. (That's a 2009 photo)
I've got pics in mind to send you, just have to choose one and upload it. Can I send you five??

I took a nice one just 2 nights ago, a large fluffy cloud in the East with a glowing rim against blue sky. I don't remember seeing anything quite like it before, but had my camera with me.

You just like being otherwise ;-) . More spectacular in the sense that there are more particles(dust, water, pollution etc) in the atmosphere so more light is scattered. Nice pic BTW.

I know what you mean, we get that quite often here. The setting sun's rays catch cloud formation in the different horizons, something like this(pity, only had my phone with me)

Yep, something like that. Also yep, I'm known for being contrary.

And i meant to ask what you meant by 'green flash'. I know I've got a sunrise photo somewhere that's all black except for a strip of pale yellow silhouetting the horizon, couldn't find it though.

After all these years of watching sunrises/sets I have yet to see a green flash. Here is a link for you, they explain it far better than I ever will.
