Cow or Steer?

Postby Paperbackslave » Wed Aug 08, 2012 5:05 am

Hi folks,

I have an appt for a steer at the butcher this Sept., and it turns out I also have a cow who is right at 6 years old that I will need to cull at about that same time ( Her teats have, one by one, gotten so large, calves are starting to have trouble with them :(, so off she goes).

So - the cow is bigger (more meat), and the steer will sell well (more money). Would you eat the 6 year old cow?

Thanks!

Most likely. I've had burger from an old cow that was even tough.

Thanks dun,

I mean, I have home butchered a 2 + year old heifer that we lost calving, and it turned out pretty good, but I have no desire to spend good money at the butcher on tough burger :yuck:

The one positive to the older one is that if you really like the taste of BEEF you will have some of the most flavorfull meat going.

Another good thing is you won't have to worry about the butcher stealing your meat. ;-)
