? For reloading guru's

Postby Alan » Wed Jul 04, 2012 11:26 am

A few years ago I help an older widow clean out her past husbands work/hobby shop. She was a good friend, she gave me everything in the shop except for any guns and air compressors etc. anyway I ended up with a ton of reloading equipment and some rounds of ammo including reloads.

I recently opened a bag of reloaded 30/30 ammo, but I quickly found out the casings appeared to have been cut down about a 1/4 or little more of an inch. They are stamped 30/30 on the bottom of the casting but do not chamber in my 30/30. Does anyone know what caliber of gun these would have been made for?

Nothing more than curious, thanks,
Alan

Are they still 30 cal? Is the reson they won;t chamber becuase the taper has been blown out or has the shoulder been moved forward?

Throw them away. You never know what the guy was loading or trying to load. Its not a risk worth taking. He could have special chambers that handle higher pressures or who knows what.

I'll agree with brute except I'll add don't throw them in the trash. Call your Sheriff and ask what the correct way to dispose of them is for your area.

I'm not looking to fire them, I'm just curious what they are. They're shorter than a factory 30/30, but the bottom of the casing is stamped 30/30. Dun, I'll get back to you on your question on the taper. Now that I think about it, I don't know if they didn't chamber or wouldn't load using the lever action of my 30/30. They are the same height as another bullet I'm clue less on with 351 stamped on the bottom of the casing.

Look up the Contender pistol and .30 Herret. This may be a good excuse for a new gun

You can pull the bullets if you use 30 cal.
else
soak the cartridges in water then put them in the thrash

I'll go along with pull the bullets of anything that isn;t factory, dump the powder in a pile and hit it with a match, neat flash. After you dump the powder our toss the brass in a can of old motor oil for a week or 2, that will inert the primers. Then you can dump them in the trash or bury them deep somewhere, that's what I do with stuff like that. Never, I repeat NEVER shoot someone elses reloads.

Thanks to all for the replies, and yes very good advice from all ..... I will not shoot the reloads, nor did I plan to, but still words well heard from all. That is my plan, is to pull the bullets sell the scrap brass and bullets ...... Which is another topic on pulling bullets ...... Coming to a thread near you soon. :D I'm not selling the brass as a money maker, more as something to do in my work shop this next winter. Again, thanks to all, I was just trying to get a little more educated on ammo and the modification of some ammo.

Thanks,
Alan

If you don;t have an inertia bullet puller, put the loaded round in the press using the correct shellholder. Run it up until the base of the bullet is about even with the top of the press. Grab the bullet with a pair of pliars and lower the case. The pliars will wedge into the threads at the top of the press. Easy as pie

I use side cutters they dig into the bull real deep and they don't pull loose!

BTW a better way to dispose of the powder is to sprinkle it in the flowerbed. Makes good fertilizer!

You missed your chance. Yesterday was the Fourth of July. You could have built a fire, tossed the shells in, and ducked for cover. Better than firecrackers or Roman Candles.

Could be a 32 special. lower part of casing is the same size as 30/30. I just picked up a sweet 32 special marlin this past weekend and bought some ammo for it today. you can put a 30/30 in a 32 but you cant put a 32 in a 30/30
