I’ve heard of a helper bull, but not a fill in.
Made you look didn't it :) lol looking at it later I wasn't sure what I meant either but thot hey I'm leaving it. I should have called it substitute bull instead 💁🏼‍♀️
I was stirring the pot on an old discussion from here years ago. It was pretty epic at the time.

This is the kind of junk I see in my part of the woods all the time. Folks tell me they can get Bill so and so’s bull for $200 for two months to cover all their cows. Nice, you get garbage calves if you get a calf, trich and warts.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, not so sure about that now. Excellent description Bootjack. Thanks.

I like “fill in” cause that’s what he’s having to to do for you.

I don’t recall that BF. We’ve had some doozies.

The helper bull was for big boy junior, or something like that. Actually made its appearance in many threads, but it was long about the feeding chicken litter discussion.

I would use him this year and then return him. Because I am assuming you keep replacement heifers, you will be adding that extra diversity to your herd. Keep a few of these bulls calves and next year you can have a fresh bull. I like to spread it around and have a lot of influence in the mix.
