Crap happens.

Post by Ky hills » Wed Jun 12, 2019 10:25 am

Seems like it happens a lot here, but I’m sure it does everywhere. Anyways just thought I would share in case others are feeling down about things going wrong. Things go wrong for all of us.
Had a 3 year old bull out with 28 head of heifers and a cow. He is out of commission with a hurt leg, he had been in for a little over a month so hoping most are bred. Most of the heifers were intended for a sale that requires a CE bull. My plan is that since he has been out for a week to wait another week or so and put one of our Hereford bulls in with them finish up. Then just keep the later bred heifers for ourselves. Neither bull qualifies as a CE, but hoping the registered bull would be ok. His sire is a CE bull, the dam was not CE from her #’s. I really don’t want to put a lot of money in another transitional bull. Can anyone tell if this bull has any phenotypical red flags as far as looking to be hard calving?

I know many would disagree, but on the few head you probably have that didn't get covered
I'd stick a few hundreds in my pocket and go to the sale. Take another hundred for the trich.

What kind of hurt leg? Last fall I had a bunch of cows starting to cycle and I found my bull limping. Moved bulls around and bought another. Within a week he was fine.

Smooth looking shoulders from the pics. Not too extreme. If the heifers are decent size it would do OK looks like to me if there is not going to be too much hybrid vigor in the calves to increase growth.

He had an injury from on the leg a couple years ago, that he healed up from, then about a couple of weeks ago he decided to tear down a stretch of fence and go through it. I'm thinking he hurt his leg again on the fence.

;-) well if he’s tearing down fences and and being a pain in the ... I’m not sure I see a bright future for him if he were mine. :)

Yep, that's what we are thinking too.
