Opinions Needed

Postby concretecowboy » Wed Jun 20, 2012 4:57 pm

I live in North Alabama, running 40 Angus brood cows. Recently leased 100 more acres (4 year contract) of good pasture with plenty of water and grass on it.
Would like to get opinions on buying 40 more 4 year old angus cattle 6 months bred at $1400 a piece. The Cattle are nice and uniform. It is the best cattle i have found in the last three months since i have been looking. What worries me is the price of cattle right now which makes expanding difficult at this time. The money to buy the cattle will be borrowed money from the bank. 1400 a piece is a lot to pay for a bred cow but with calf prices the way they are i think it is a calculated risk that makes good cows worth that money right now.
I have plenty of hay, equipment, resources to support the added cattle.
My question is do you guys think it is worth the risk buying when prices are so high????
Would appreciate opinions.

1. Mouth them to determine age, I won't buy anything above 6 at these prices.
2. $1400 ain't bad at all for good guaranteed bred cows.
3. You should, by my calculations, have plenty of time to make them a good investment while prices are high. No such thing as a guarantee in cattle but I did stay at a Holliday Inn Express last night. ;-)
The quickest way to lose money in the cattle business is to do it the way grandpa did it.....and the quickest way to lose everything in the cattle business it to forget the way grandpa did it. (Dad)

Angus broods cows 4x6's .. seem top be a good buy at that price. Need to make sure they really are 4x6's... And you are the only one who can say if its worth the risk to you...
As someone said on here a week ago.. the cattle business is a legal way of gambling.. enter at your own risk.

I don't think that sounds like a bad price for the cows. They've gotten a little cheaper as of late but good quality stuff with a reputation behind them would be worth that all day long. If I could find a place to run an additional 40 head I'd be jumping up and down. Rent ground is hard to find around here. Put pencil to paper and see how long it will take you to pay them off. Good luck.
