New here but not to cattle.

Post by chaneysranch » Wed Nov 13, 2019 6:40 pm

Hi,
I'm still a newbe at keeping cattle. We started out about 7 years ago with a bred Jersey milk cow. Got her dirt cheap, friend was divorcing. Big mistake, she had 2 blank quarters and later found out via ultrasound she had a mummy calf. :( Big lessons learned the hard way. So, she went to the sale barn. That's when I realized I've got a lot to learn, and found a mentor.
Managed to add 2 new heifers the following spring purchased directly from a dairy farm. My vet is a commercial dairy vet for the area and arranged finding the 2 heifers for me. Going forward, we did use any bull calves as steers for the freezer, sold the heifers. After the 4th fella came back from the butcher that fall, decided its time to look at beef breeds. Wanted to be a little smarter about things this time, I called my vet 1st. We finally ran across a nice line of Herefords, bought 2 yearling heifers and a yearling bull. I was able to hands on pick my yearlings and see the sires and dams. Put my 2 Jersey cows in with Nero the bull in March this year. Big gentle puppy dog cows! My niece showed one of the Heifers in 4H last summer. Totally different temperament than our jerseys. No I do not trust any cow! But there is a big difference in our breeds. We are going down to one Jersey this year since the kids are grown and gone. Don't need that much milk anymore!

Welcome! And there is nothing sweeter than a Jersey! They are my favourite. But! I’ve been kicked my a jersey more times than any other breed. They are sweet, but they are feisty.
