Slam Gates / Latches -- DIY or Buy 'em

Postby Kathie in Thorp » Thu May 10, 2012 9:16 pm

Have any of you on the CT board built your own slam gates/latches? If so, would appreciate your plans/pics. If not, who do you recommend to buy the gizmos from? We have big heavy gates, but will probably have to adapt them. Have a good machinist/metal fabricator in-house that we'll put to work, but he ain't a "cattle guy"! The long-awaited upgraded cattle handling system is in the works! :) As always, thank you!

Gary, PM me with your personal email address, and I'll take some pics of those gates this weekend. I can figure out the pics via private email, but not via Cattleboard! Thx. Kathie

Use photobucket to post pics here. I don't have a link to any but the ones I've seen in the past are cheeper to buy than make. AC will have a link but his Internet is still down.

The DIY design is similar to one of mine. Mine have a slot for pulling it back open with a piece of round stock welded to the latch in a T. Scrap short iron from various projects come in handy for such things. Two pieces of thick small angle iron of different sizes spot welded together make a great handle slot to house the latch versus the tube steel.
Our ancestors gave us this. They fought to make it what it is. All we have to do is defend it.
