Ethanol

Postby Jogeephus » Thu Jan 12, 2012 9:53 am

Just learned today that you shouldn't use ethanol blended fuel in an air compressor unless you add fueld stablizer to the mix. About a $200 lesson. Lesson learned. I figure the ethanol gas cost me $203.89/gallon.

Sat too long?
Btw. Dont put ethanol fuel in anything that doesnt get used much. Or add stablizer to it.

It is funny how I keep hearing how ethanol is so bad for small engines. It makes me wonder what small engine mechanics did all day before ethanol came along, they must not have had anything to do. I don't add stabilizer to anything and my mower and line trimmer both go 7-8 months without being used but still start and run fine in the spring and have for years. I'm just lucky I guess.

Dang...I just realized I shouldn't have said that. Now I will probably have trouble with everything next spring. I think I will pour some sea-foam in everything tonight. Disregard that first paragraph.

LOL....all your plastic parts the fuel comes in contact with (maybe even those that don't) will probably crumble the next time you touch them.

Wanna buy a nearly new air compressor? I'll even top it off for you. ;-)

Does that mean you all don't burn ethanol up that way?

Personally I think Ethanol is a complete rip off.

As a matter of fact we have been forced to use ethanol for the last decade and a half. I guess us inbredredneck Minnesotans just have not burned the amount of gallons, thru our small engines, 2 cycle engines, boats, cars trucks, lawn mowers, weed eaters, tractors and every other gasoline engine made as you fellas down south who are just starting to burn it. I'm sure after we have been burned it long enough we will see all the problems you southerners all talk about. But for now we are just thankfull we don't have those problems.

How many times do i have to explain this? High humidity climates are esp bad with ethanol. The ethanol absorbs moisture from the air. When that happens it sinks because its now heavier. Now it also has a chemical reaction because of the water. And then its the first thing sucked into the carb ir intake.
Why is this so hard to grasp?

Makes sense to me Hook.

I just think the entire ethanol program is ridiculous and that we should be drilling for more oil in US as well as utilizing our enormous natural gas reserves more effectively. It is my understanding that it takes a tremendous amount of energy and water to produce ethanol. Not efficient.

I forgot about the humidity in the south hook Thanks for reminding me. 105+ degree air temp and 90+ RH. Yep thats bad. We have humidity as well.
