Repairing cement cracks for feed (ing) floor ?

Postby Stocker Steve » Sun Aug 05, 2012 12:44 am

I have three areas to repair with cracks that range from narrow to about 2" wide...
- the interior cement bottom of a metal grain bin that I plan to store corn in
- the exterior floor of a torn down building that I plan to use for short term beet pulp storage
- the exterior floor of a torn down building that I plan to feed hay on

The easy exterior approach would be to put class 5 in the exterior cracks... I don't thick putting cement in the cracks would hold up to the frost heaving. Buying tubes of the typical cement crack filler tubes would be expensive. Can one use the 5 gallon pails of asphalt crack filler with success for both interior and exterior, or is there a better approach?

Any filler that is elastic and can tolerate your cold temps. will work. Make sure to clean it well first for better adhesion.
Anything you do is only temporary. The constant up and down motion from season to season will make the concrete crawl apart over time. If you ever pore a new one use more steel rebar.

I have seen water or compressed air used to clean the edges before filling. Is either OK?

Either will work, but paint the edges on the cracked surfaces with something like the concrete glue/cement stuff if you're using anything besides an epoxy to repair the cracks.

There is a 2 part semi-dry epoxy that's made for fixing concrete. We have a couple of concrete gate posts about 2 foot square. Sometime through the years the hinge bolts broke off or just wobbled enough to pull out. The posts are in the 75-80 year old range. Some I drilled new holes others I just blew out the dust and stuff from the hinge bolt holes. I mixed this epoxy stuff, it's about the consistancy of window glazing putty, (a good concrete contractor can tell you what it's called) and stuffed it into the holes and screwed the hinge bolts back in. It's been about 8 years and they're still as strong and holding as well as they did when I first did it. A couple of the gates are 16 foot pipe and the gates themselves droop a bit but the hinge is in solid.

The Np1 sonaborn is great but becomes very expensive. I have used it a lot for expansion joints and crack filling. First I pre fill the crack with foam backer rod (foam rope cut to fit) and then put the Np1 over the top as it doesn't need to be over an 1/8" thick to hold and maintain a seal.

I went back and checked what I sell the army base and it is Sonolastic SL1 Self Leveling Sealant 825ml. you would probally still have to use Novatech's sugestions if cracks are large

The wider the crack the thicker it needs to be....

but probably not the best product for the 2 inch cracks...however it is also sold as a two part mix for larger applications....For cracks larger than an inch I think I'd go with the NP1 about 3/4 to 1 inch thick and using the primer sealant on the concrete for added adhesion.
