Has any one tried composite fence posts? How long have you had them in the ground?

Better than wood? Why? How so?

What do you think?

Are you using them for electric fence? I was gave 40 12' sticks of used 3/4 pvc pipe and I cut them into 4' post. Works very well for electric fences.

Yes, for electric fence.

Help me understand the 3/4 pvc.... That is not a solid post, it is a hollow pipe, right? Did you use that as a sleeve around metal/wood or something. I would have thought pipe was too flexible. What am I missing?

Free is good, especially when it works....

Schedule 40 3/4 inch PVC is not too flexible. However, it will not drive into ground that is very hard. It is not stiff enough to drive well. I put in mostly painted fiberglass, but have also used PVC. My concern is how it will weather. I did put a cap on top to keep it from collecting water.
This IS my first rodeo.

Regular PVC exposed to the sun won;t last very long, get's brittle. Rather then PVC for exposed stuff I use the grey conduit. I've had some of it up for 15 years and it's as good today as the day I put it up.

Dun, How thick is the pipe? Will it hold up HT?

The wall thickness is probably around 1/8 inch. I climb it when I'm too lazy to go to the gate and it's still solid.

I took a hammer and drove the post in the ground probably 5 or 6 inches where I could. They would hold good unless something ran thru the fence it would pull the post up but wouldn't break the wire. I did a metal post every 10 pvc post and a rebar post every 5 pvc post.

I just use the grey 2 inch conduit for anyplace that's exposed that I would use the white stuff. Mostly it's used to pass wire or poly pipe through in areas that get driven over and I use it for haning oilers. A friend of mine was throwing away a pickup load of the stuff cut into 5 foot long sections, I had him throw it my way.
