A good manager can make money with just about anything. He knows what he has to work with and he works with that.........A poor manager can't make money with the best of everything. The cattle can't overcome his stupidity.

I guess ever part of the country may vary with regard to size and kind of timber. Here we have more woods per sq. Mile than any other state and my county has more woods per square mile than any county in the state.

We use trees in fence lines but nail a cedar board to the tree and nail or screw the insulator to the board that way the tree will not grow around the insulator. We also use enough springs so if a tree falls on the fence it does not hurt the fence. Also if we run fence through the woods and leave an over story the ground is shaded so we don,t have as much brush growing up and that makes it easy to maintain the fence. The best way to open up and old pasture here is to fence it off put cattle in and then cut and burn the Alders and saplings and log the larger trees but never pull a stump because if you pull stumps you'll have a ton of rocks to deal with. That's because most areas have had all the surface rocks picked 100 years ago before the rail roads opened up the West and farming declined here because of cheaper prices from the West. We just let the sumps rot and frost seed the ground around the stumps. If we stock the area with the right number of head they will keep any green growth down and we feed a little hay too.

We also never shut the fencer off, summer or winter cows or no cows. That keeps moose from going through the fence.
What works here most likely won,t work some place else.

Must be a real good fencer Rich I had a moose in my lawn at camp one time, once he knew I was there he crashed out of there like he saw the devil . Itwould take a concrete wall to stop one runnin blind like that and he was a small one.

Main problem I see with fencing to trees is the growth of the tree itself.
Too fast of growth and you'll be fixing the fence again in short order

I am assuming all this clearing is going on your side of the fence?

If it is steep, as you say, what is going to keep the dirt in place after you push it & the trees around?

I can only burn so much fire wood and I don't wanna waste a tree so alot of treesget left inside my buffer then I get them as needed. I'd just soon fence in open hay fields but I don't have any.
