weather related issues in the hay meadow...

Post by Texas Gal » Fri Jun 21, 2019 10:51 am

The 10+ inches of rain in May alone is causing some problems in my hay meadow. It appears there are several low lying areas that sat underwater too long and the grass has died. :( The rest of the meadow is growing like the proverbial house afire. Looks like next year's project will be renovating the hay meadow. It's good to have goals.

Hay fields over this way also look the same.
I wish my brain could forget what my eyes have seen.

Give it time, ours has done this too. If the seedbank is decent, it will fill back in.

Where it died out here, has came back a beautiful stand almost of white and red clover, Crab Grass, and or bag of lice stuff.

Is it still waiting to be cut?

we had overseeded with ryegrass for an rarely first cutting. we finally got it cut and baled over Memorial Day weekend....about 3-4 weeks past it's prime. the cows won't care in January :) . the regrowth is beautiful, lush and green ......except for the drowned out areas.

I had the overgrown problem, as usual, this spring for the same reason. However, On grasses, vs sudan-sorghums of the generally available variety, I don't worry that much. My customers aren't horse folks, and the others feed ruminants and the whole plant is there including the seed heads.....that you buy in the store in the bag for animal feed...... as the saying went...forget the author: "Why worry, be happy!"
