Calves sold well

Post by Till-Hill » Fri Oct 18, 2019 2:53 pm

Sold today after I retained some heifers and 1 bull calf and a steer to eat.
23 head went as bawlers, 1 round of shots and an Iowa green tag in ear.

6 steers 591# $1.49
5 steers 453# $1.59
1 chrome steer 605# $1.11
steers were born from 3/22-4/22 and was 3 reds rest blacks, 1 black had some chrome they sorted single

Heifers went all as 1 bunch. They were born 3/22-4/26
11 head 527# $1.30

Happy at the end of the day, couldn't hold them any longer. No grass and no where to wean them so I'm at the mercy of the market this time of year.

Retained heifers weight per day of age was up .1# from last year and was happy with how they looked too!

Looks like you did all right.
Next time you have a chromed up steer, you might take a picture and post on Craig's list or a show board for a show calf. Kids love that chrome.

Not this one, attitude also! I would have kept him to eat but already kept one and I thought maybe he would sneak thru!

I have been watching our local sales and I would be tickled pink to get those prices. I can't hold my calves much longer and prices here are really low.

The lighter steers would do a bit better than that here. But other wise you were pretty much the same as our market.

Glad you are happy with how things went, it's good to get it done for sure. Up here if it's Simmie chrome they outsell the straight coloured.

So $881 for big steers and $720 for light steers, or $1.17/lb on the difference of 138 lbs..

When have you seen markets that discounted light cattle this much ?

My feedlot buyer pays me the highest price paid at local market, no matter what the weight was. And mine are always in the high 6's. This year, they averaged 724# - still got the high price.
Just checked back on the sale that my price was based on:
300-500# - $139
500-700# - $144
700+ - $120
So, buyers were willing to pay more for the medium heavy over the light weights.

We would be buying a semi load at those prices.
