He should only claim what they are worth when they disappeared.
No, he should claim present day worth of their future value. That is what is done when there is a wildfire that kills immature trees that you were expecting to grow out to a much higher value in the future. That is what is done when you know who or what started the fire and they are insured which of course is not always the case.
