Heifers

Post by Caustic Burno » Sat Jan 26, 2019 8:04 pm

I hauled a couple 4wt heifers today got 1.46.
They brought top dollar in their weight class.
One weighed 420 the other 430.
That’s getting pretty tight that’s roughly 100 bucks over inputs.

That's .20 over the best here.
My thoughts only, don't bet the farm on them. KT

Sold 717# May born heifers last week for $124.50. Should have sold them a bit sooner. Big heifer VOG averages $0.75/lb..

Takes a big bred running age cow here to dollar up to a heifer calf price...

For us small producers, no. It's our hobby. Very expensive hobby.
If I could work the same amount of over time without any expenses I could make lots more clear money.

Cattle are down right now. Was going to ship mine last week but decided to hold off.
$500 in inputs seems a little high. Might be a good thread to see what the real cost of raising a calf are. Mine are about $325 but I probably leave a few things out to make myself feel better. :)

Spring green up will help my area prices for sure. The area has a hay shortage and the buyers know it.
Local feed store is getting 75-80 bucks on a 4x5.
Hay is my biggest expense most years.
I use a 1.50 inputs a day as rule of thumb, mine usually run 1.30 range plus or minus a nickel for the last few years. Mine will be higher this year as the bulk diesel tank is about empty.
I have been lazy and haven’t done the books for last year. I have everything on the table to do so and I’m starting to get the evil eye from the Mrs. over her table.
