Massey 265

Postby Wick on Mon Nov 02, 2009 6:30 am

Just purchased a used Massey 265 tractor at a local estate auction. 1900 hrs on it and one set of hydralic hook ups, new rubber and battery. Anything to be aware of on these tractors? Such as something I want to look at replacing or making sure in great shape before we put it to work? Don't have any knowlege about the massey tractors. Only have fords. So any input is helpful. I plan on changing filters, oil, and the normal stuff. Seems to run strong when we were driving it home. Old man that had it only bush hogged with it the last 20 years or so. (maybe 3 acres) It has not seen hard work for years. Anyone have an old manual lying around for one of these tractors? Don't know exactly the year of the thing either.

Never had a 265, but have had a couple of 235 in the family for years, years and years. Keep them serviced, and they last forever.

When jews have identity it is called history.
When whites have identity it is called racism.

Mid/late 1970's. I have a 275.
Good useful tractors. On the downside, mine leaks like crazy. I don't think Perkins had good gaskets in that era. You might tighten a few bolts and fare better than me. I'm not the greatest with tractors, but they stay inside and dry and I walk around them before I use them.
I have 6000+ hrs showing, and the clock hasn't worked in years.
Be sure to grease the front end. It is hard to do (IMO) and it wears if you don't do it. I've replaced the bushings up there twice and I need to again.
I try to be cynical, but it's hard to keep up.--Lily Tomlin

I have had 1975 MF 255 for 33 years. Good advice on lubing the front axle. Lost the zerk several years ago and had to replace the kingpin. Change fuel filter before winter needed or not, water in fuel can really mess with the fuel pump (trust me). I put remote hydralics and BH loader on mine about 6 years ago and thought I had a new tractor. Try to get a shop manual & parts manual through Massey. May cost $60 to $70 each but quality of copy is better. You can get them from Jensales or Yesterdays Tractors but those are likely copies. Sometime the copies are clear and plain others not so clear. Massey books appear to be original print. I think their worth the extra cost. The tractor may have multi-power (lever on the dash) which I like. Never had problems with mine. If your remote levers are between your knees then that is just add on which will work for some things but probably not enough volume for a loader. Yours is about 60 or 65 hp which is a good size and handling tractor. Good luck.

Great advice. I too had a 235, and loved it except for the fact everything was hard to work on. But as Grannysoo says..keep it maintained, and they last a long, long time.
