    Springs

Yes, yes, and yes, Have had a 500 lb steer fall in one, neighbors dog found him and we were able to get him out alive. I’ve had a 200 lb calf in one that we were able to pull out and also a baby calf a few days old. Thankfully have never had one die from falling in. Have had a calf break a leg...

    Springs

Not in my recent memory, though I'm sure in severe drought conditions it does. On down the branch does dry up in the summer during extended dry spells, but there's always some water right there just below that hole at the bottom of the hill. It stays open during the winter too and doesn't freeze...

    Springs

Other day I posted about falling in a sinkhole, and in the conversations underground water and springs were mentioned. Here is one of our springs that is the start of a branch that goes through our property and couple others before becoming a sizable creek a little ways down. There has been a...

    Pink Eye?

I have used patches in conjunction with antibiotic treatment. The patches help to keep out light, dust and flies. I don’t always use the patches, but if I have them on hand it’s a good practice I believe. I have kept the affected animals up in a barn for a few days after treatment too instead...

    Pink Eye?

I’ve had pretty good success with them healing up when given LA 200 or LA 300 early on. Most times they heal up or have just a small scar ( white or cloudy spot in the eye. Occasionally, there will be one that the eye bulges out.

She was, she took after the bull in that regard. That picture of her as taken day before processing so she had been on full feed for a while.

Random cow and her heifer calves

Several years ago I bought a group of 3 Hereford heifers averaging right around 850 lbs at the Hereford influence sale in Stanford KY. One heifer was bat blank crazy and sold at the next available sale day. The other two were pretty good and bred and calves out. One had an awful looking udder...

    New Tractor

The man that does our hay has 2 5065 tractors and a 5075. He usually rolls with the 5075 but has used a 65. The 75 turned over with him somewhere in the county a couple years ago. I’ve gotten mine to tipping a few times but got out of the situation before it got worse.

    New Tractor

We got John Deere 5055e 4wd with a front end loader few years ago. It’s a very basic tractor, doesn’t use DEF, So far it’s a good little tractor, I’m not doing any hay or pasture mowing with it just feeding hay and odd jobs around the farm. If I were mowing or haying the 5075 model would be...

    Food Poisoning

I’ve heard people call eggs cackle berries or hen fruit. I adopted the term hen fruit, and call them that a lot.

    Foot rot

Thanks for that information, I’ll be looking into a pinkeye vaccine like that. I’m becoming increasingly worried about Anaplasmosis, as it is getting more of a presence here over the last several years.

    Food Poisoning

Yeah it’s the same thing just that folks in my parents and grandparents generations called them dressed as it sounded better for church folks to say.
